Is acupuncture painful?
It is common to associate acupuncture needles with negative experiences of needles used in conventional medicine. However acupuncture needles are very thin and often described as being “hair like.” For most people acupuncture is a painless process. You may feel a Qi sensation which can be described as a dull ache, pressure sensation, warmth, or tingling. Most people find the experience deeply relaxing and restorative.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture therapy has been used safely for thousands of years in China. The needles are approved by the FDA. They are sterile and single use only. A great advantage of acupuncture is the absence of serious side effects.
What should I expect from my first treatment?
After the first treatment has been administered, you may experience some immediate pain relief. Some people don't feel much during the treatment itself but report dramatic results later (sometimes even days later!). Some people experience a sudden burst of energy while others may feel relaxed.
How long do the treatments take?
The initial visit takes about 1 ½ hour. This is when a full examination is done using the diagnostic tools of Chinese medicine, to assess the condition of the Qi and to find the cause of the condition. It also includes a 20 minutes acupuncture treatment.
A follow up visit takes 45 to 60 minutes. It includes 20 to 25 minutes resting with the needles in place. This is deeply relaxing, many people even fall asleep.
How many treatments will I need, and what about the cost?
This depends on the severity, and the duration of the condition. Acute conditions respond well to 1- 2 treatments per week for a short period of time. Chronic conditions often warrant weekly treatments for a period of time. Some patients respond favorably after only one or a few treatments, while others may need six to eight treatments. The treatments build on each other and the effect is cumulative.

What else is included in a session?
Acupuncturists use massage, relaxation techniques, lifestyle advice, Qi Gong, heat, electric stimulation, and herbal therapy to help with the treatment.
Will it conflict with my other medications?
Acupuncture is used to complement and supplement your physician’s treatments, not to replace them. A thorough medical history precedes any recommendation of herbs, to avoid any interactions with Western drugs.

Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No, in most cases you do not need a referral. Some Kaiser insurance plans require a doctor’s referral, which is often easy to get.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, I am an in-network provider for:
Kaiser Permanente, Blue Cross Blue Shield (local and federal), Cigna, ODS, Aetna, Providence, CHP, Life-wise, United Healthcare, and Health Net.
Do you accept motor vehicle accident insurance?
Yes I do. All drivers with Oregon insurance are fully covered by personal injury protection (PIP) to help with recovery from accident related pain. I handle all insurance billing and no referral from a doctor is needed for acupuncture treatment.
