Some individuals also find that acupuncture helps relieve fatigue, pain and neuropathy associated with cancer and its treatment.
MS is a disease of the central nervous system. It attacks the myelin, which sheaths the nerves, thus affecting signals between the brain and the body. This may lead to a wide variety of symptoms depending on the nerves involved. Common symptoms are loss of motor control and balance problems. Some patients suffer loss of bladder and bowel control. There may be an emotional sense of helplessness and depression.
The use of acupuncture in the treatment of MS is geared toward two goals. The first is to bring as much relief of the symptoms as possible. The second goal is to enable the patient to be able to manage the disease in a way that allows them to fully experience the joy of living. These goals have a good chance of being met through a combined approach of acupuncture, a healthy diet, and mild exercise.
Acupuncture treatments for MS can reduce pain, decrease spasticity, improve bladder and bowel control, reduce stress and improve wellbeing, all contributing to an improvement in quality of life.
Fibromyalgia is a pain condition where the cause is unknown to western medicine. It is characterized by chronic, widespread muscle aching, pain, and stiffness. The pain may involve the entire body, but often primarily focuses around the neck, shoulders, low back, and hips. Even minor exercise can cause pain and reduced energy. Patients with fibromyalgia often experience fatigue, sleep disorders, chronic headaches, and/or irritable bowel syndrome.
Since there is little that western medicine has found to be significantly effective to treat this condition, except for prescribing drugs for the different symptoms, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are useful to explore as an alternative solution. Acupuncture treatment focus on improving sleep so that the tissues affected have time to recover. Acupuncture can also effectively reduce the pain, fatigue and anxiety.
