Acupuncture for Motor Vehicle Accidents

Car Crash

Acupuncture for Car Crash Victims

Frequently, in the case of car crashes with minimal impact, there are no initial signs of injury or pain. However, in the next day or two, pain may develop in the neck, shoulder, or low back. If left untreated, it can lead to incapacitating and chronic pain conditions. Acupuncture is a great complement to the often limited help Western Medicine has to offer.

The State of Oregon is a no-fault state. This means that it doesn’t matter if you caused the accident or not, you are entitled to receive personal injury protection (PIP) under your automobile insurance policy. Oregon law mandates that you, and all passengers in your car, have up to $15,000 each to cover any medical bills resulting from the car accident. You can go directly to an Acupuncturist for post-accident care.

A motor vehicle accident can cause traumatic injuries to many different parts of the body. Common injuries where acupuncture can play an important role to speed up the recovery include:

Cervical Strain

Also known as whiplash, cervical strain is a stretch injury to muscles and ligaments of the neck caused by sudden deceleration or acceleration. Typically, significant pain may not appear immediately after the accident, but may increase over days after the initial injury. It is important to immediately see a qualified physician to clinically evaluate for possible fractures, dislocations, compressed nerves, or ligament instability. This condition is optimally treated immediately. Lack of early aggressive treatment may increase the likelihood of chronic pain or long-term disability.

Myofascial Pain

This can manifest as localized pain, tightness, weakness, limited range of motion, and/or touch sensitivity in a taut muscle band. These can be triggered by either the trauma or psychological stress from a motor vehicle accident.

This is caused by impingement or inflammation of the nerve roots originating along the spinal cord. Radiculopathy can manifest or be made worse (for those with pre-existing conditions) in patients with acute traumatic injuries. Symptoms include weakness, tingling, radiating pain, or decreased touch sensitivity or reflexes.

The sudden physical and psychological trauma of a motor vehicle accident can trigger a variety of psychiatric conditions and mood disorders in many patients. Post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression are just a few of the conditions that can impact quality of life.

Acupuncture treats the physical symptoms as well as the depression and anxiety that can result from just being in pain or not being able to do routine tasks or exercise. Acupuncture has been shown to have better results in treatment for aches, pains and post-traumatic stress than conventional medicine.
